eCommerce Web Development

If you want to sell your products online you need an eCommerce-enabled website. You need a website with a shopping cart and online payment facility, so your customers can pay online, securely, for your products and services. But which is the right option?

Do you already have a shopping cart-enabled website but you are unhappy with the system's features or performance? Maybe you want to analyse individual user's behaviour to tailor their experience on the site. There are a lot of eCommerce systems out there, many of which have been extended from old systems over the years and quite frankly, in my view they no longer cut the mustard. I only work with the market-leading, best-in-class products that offer easy-to-use administration systems as well as smooth, simple user interfaces and transaction processes.

Which shopping cart is right for me?

This really depends on the type of website you require, whether it is a pure shopping site or whether your products area is just one part of a bigger system. It also depends on the volumes you will be selling. As a rule of thumb Paypal and other forms of online merchant payment services are more cost-effective if you are trading in low-value items or have low volume. Otherwise it is more cost-effective to integrate a payment processing engine connected directly to your merchant account at your bank.

Whatever your requirements, contact me for a free consultation on your eCommerce project.

I have extensive experience in the following shopping cart systems:

Umbraco uCommerce

Umbraco is also a full-featured website management framework. It differs from Kentico above in that it suits a more custom-built website, with bespoke features and applications, rather than standard functionality that can be provided by using pre-built components. It is open-source software which means the base system is free to use. I often recommend Umbraco to clients who require a shopping cart integrated with a website that needs a more advanced, custom specification.

Kentico eCommerce

Kentico is a full-featured content management system that comes with an excellent shopping cart eCommerce module. It is ideal for clients who have websites where accepting online payments for their products and services is just one facet to their site. Perhaps their site contains other web applications and advanced functionality. It is also ideal for clients who want to host the system on their own servers so they can utilise specific tools to monitor and maintain their system. Kentico is commercial software so it incurs an upfont fee to use the software.

Shopify

An excellent choice for small to medium size websites, selling both physical and digital goods. The management interface is one of the best I've used of any platform, and it can be integrated with all the major payment processing and shipping systems. It is a hosted solution, so there is a flat monthly fee as well as sales commissions to pay. This is not suitable for all sites, but if you are looking to get started selling online this can be a great option, as you can minimise your initial outlay and spread out the cost of ownership.

From my clients:

"Barry Fogarty was our main programmer on the UlsterTrader.com site since inception in 2008. From the outset, Barry brought a different perspective to the project and was able to guide us in technical areas which we were unsure of. Rather than pushing one particular option, Barry was always careful to outline the implications of various choices along the way, which enabled us to make informed decisions. The expertise that he brought to the project is one of the main factors behind our early successes."
