Umbraco CMS Review
Umbraco is an open-source content management system based on Microsoft's
.Net framework.
It was started in Denmark in 2004 and now powers some eighty-five thousand websites - including some big names like
Wired Magazine and
Heinz.
New modules, or packages, are being released all the time by the dedicated Umbraco developer community.
Umbraco CMS Features
- Easy to use tools for creating and publishing content
- Rollback support (content versioning)
- Simple, role-based access permissions (Author, Publisher, Administrator)
- Extensible framework - any customisation is possible
- No license fees
Umbraco is more of a framework, or foundation, upon which a highly interactive website can be built. It is not an out-of-the-box solution,
like DotNetNuke or Kentico. This, I believe, is a good thing. Often, what happens with out-of-the-box solutions is that
90% of their features are not required,
and actually end up getting in the way. With Umbraco, only features you actually need are included, and set up
according to your exact needs. No
one-size-fits-all approach here. This means that actually getting things done in Umbraco
is a breeze.
